Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 6 hours
Serves: 6-8
Ingredients
For the ham
- 1.5-1.8kg unsmoked boneless gammon joint
- 2l cola (not diet)
- 1 carrot, peeled and chopped
- 1 onion, peeled and quartered
- 1 stick celery, chopped
- 1 cinnamon stick
- ½ tbsp peppercorns
- 1 bay leaf
For the glaze
- 150ml maple syrup
- 2 tbsp wholegrain mustard
- 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
- pinch of ground cloves or five-spice
Method
Step 1: To begin, place the gammon joint into your Morphy Richards Slow Cooker, cover in cola and set to medium. Next, add the chopped carrot, quartered onion, chopped celery, cinnamon stick, half a teaspoon of peppercorns and one bay leaf.
Step 2: Slow cook for 5 and a half hours on low until the gammon is tender but still holds its shape. If necessary, top up with boiling water to keep the gammon fully covered.
Step 3: Following the slow cooking time, carefully pour the liquid away and let the ham cool while you heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Gently lift the ham and place into a roasting tin. Cut the skin away leaving behind an even layer of fat. Complete this step by scoring a criss-cross pattern all over the fat.
Step 4: Next, mix the maple syrup, vinegar, mustard and ground cloves or five-spice in a jug. Pour half over the fat, roast for 15 minutes followed by pouring over the rest and return to the oven for another 30 minutes.
Step 5: Remove from the oven and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. Finally, spoon more glaze over the top!
